Guest House

EcoTural Creative transformed a neglected 1970s garden shed into a modern, comfortable retreat by embracing sustainable design and creative material reuse. Rather than demolishing the existing structure, we preserved its character and gave it new life through thoughtful design, reclaimed materials, and carefully selected high-quality finishes.

BEFORE

The renovation included reclaimed wood accents, polished concrete floors, new windows and doors, upgraded lighting, a fully equipped kitchen, new insulation, and a new roof—creating a space that is both functional and welcoming.

One of the project’s signature features is the custom bathroom vanity, handcrafted from salvaged redwood recovered from a fire-damaged home and topped with a cast-in-place concrete countertop. Outside, a privacy fence encloses a peaceful courtyard featuring a unique open-air shower, offering guests an immersive connection with nature while maintaining complete privacy.

Design Strategy

Adaptive Reuse – Instead of replacing the structure, we re-imagined the existing shed, reducing construction waste while preserving its original footprint and character.

Reclaimed Wood – Salvaged redwood from a fire-damaged house was transformed into a custom vanity and faucet enclosure, demonstrating how reclaimed materials can become distinctive design elements with a second life.

Open Layout – Despite its compact footprint of approximately 400 square feet, the studio was transformed into a functional and comfortable retreat. The open layout integrates a full kitchen, dining area, living space, bedroom, and half bathroom while maximizing the sense of space and connection between areas.

Desert Climate Adaptation – The existing West-facing orientation of the shed naturally supports comfort in the Desert climate. This positioning helps reduce harsh direct sunlight exposure while allowing the courtyard to remain enjoyable throughout the day, creating a welcoming connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces.

Natural Ventilation – Strategically placed windows and passive airflow design improve natural circulation, helping maintain indoor comfort while reducing reliance on mechanical cooling.

Outdoor Living – A private outdoor courtyard extends the living space beyond the walls of the studio. The handcrafted outdoor shower creates a memorable experience that celebrates the surrounding landscape while offering guests comfort, privacy, and a deeper connection to nature.
